How to Change Your SIL Provider
You can change your SIL provider at any time. Talk to your current provider first, check the notice period in your service agreement, and find a new registered provider before you finish with the old one so there's no gap in support. If the same provider is your landlord, your tenancy is a separate agreement and shouldn't depend on keeping them for support.
What Are the Steps?
The NDIA sets out five.
- Talk to your provider about what isn't working. A support coordinator or someone you trust can help.
- Check your service agreement for the notice period and any fees for ending early.
- Find a new registered SIL provider and sign a new service agreement before you leave the old one.
- Tell your current provider you're leaving, and tell your support coordinator or plan manager.
- Update your provider relationships in the my NDIS participant portal, or check whether the provider will do it.
Can You Keep Your Home?
That's what the rules are designed for. Your tenancy and your support are separate.
The SIL Practice Standards say you have the right to change, in whole or in part, the provider who delivers your SIL at any time during your tenancy agreement, and the provider must have arrangements to make that possible. They must take reasonable steps so you aren't disadvantaged in your housing.
In a shared home, support is shared, so a new provider has to work alongside your housemates' arrangements. That can be harder in practice, so involve your support coordinator early.
Looking for SIL Support?
We'll connect you with a registered SIL provider who may have support or a vacancy that suits.
What If Your Provider Didn't Register?
You'll need to move to a registered provider. Your plan and funding don't change.
Since 1 October 2026, SIL can only be delivered by registered providers or providers who applied before that date. The NDIA says it will help participants whose provider hasn't registered understand their options and find a new one. Ask your provider directly whether they're registered, and check the NDIS Commission's provider register.
What If Something Is Seriously Wrong?
Contact the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. If someone is in immediate danger, call 000.
You can report an issue about the quality or safety of support to the Commission on 1800 035 544, or online. Family, a friend or an independent advocate can help you make the report.
Questions People Ask
How much notice do I need to give my SIL provider?
It's in your service agreement. You may be charged a fee if you don't give the agreed notice.
Can I change just part of my SIL support?
The SIL Practice Standards say you can change the provider of your SIL in whole or in part. How that works in a shared home is worth talking through with your coordinator.
Will changing providers affect my funding?
No. Your SIL funding is based on your support needs and stays in your plan when you change provider.
