Questions and Answers
supportedindependentlivingservices.com.au is a free, independent service that connects people on the NDIS with registered supported independent living (SIL) providers. Here are the questions people ask most, about SIL itself and about how we work. Our guides go into each topic in more depth.
About SIL
What is SIL?
Supported independent living: NDIS funding for support workers who help or supervise someone with daily tasks at home, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It pays for the support, not the house.
Who decides if someone gets SIL?
The NDIA, based on evidence such as occupational therapy reports. It works out the hours, ratios and overnight support, and puts the SIL funding in the plan.
What do people living with SIL pay?
Their own rent, groceries, utilities, phone and internet, usually from the Disability Support Pension or other income. SIL can't be used for any of those.
What's the difference between SIL and SDA?
SIL is funding for support workers. SDA (specialist disability accommodation) is funding for a specially designed home. Some people have both, often from different providers.
Does my SIL provider have to be registered?
Yes. Since 1 October 2026, SIL can only be delivered by providers registered with the NDIS Commission, or providers who applied before that date and are waiting on a decision.
Using This Service
What does this service do?
We connect NDIS participants, families and support coordinators with registered SIL providers who may have support or a vacancy that suits. You answer a few questions, we pass your details to one suitable provider, and they contact you.
Does it cost anything?
No. It's free for you. Providers pay us for introductions, which is how we keep it free. It doesn't change what your SIL costs, which is limited by the NDIS pricing schedule.
Are you part of the NDIS?
No. We're an independent service. We're not part of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) or the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and we don't deliver support or own homes.
How soon will someone contact me?
It depends on the provider. We only pass your details to providers who may have support or a vacancy now or coming up, and we follow up to check you were contacted. If you haven't heard back, email us and we'll chase it.
Do you cover my area?
We take enquiries from every state and territory. Put the postcode where the person would like to live in the form.
Can I use this if SIL isn't in the plan yet?
Yes, tell us where things are at. Providers can only deliver SIL that's funded, so we'll also point you to how to ask for home and living supports.
Your Details
Who sees my details?
Only the registered SIL provider we match you with. If they can't help, we pass your details to another registered provider, one at a time, up to 3 in total. Nobody else gets them for their own marketing.
Can I change my mind?
Yes. Email hello@supportedindependentlivingservices.com.au and we'll stop passing your details on and let any provider we've introduced you to know.
Why do you ask about support needs?
So the provider can tell straight away whether they could help, and you don't have to explain everything twice. We keep it to a rough idea and ask for your consent first, because this is sensitive information.
For Support Coordinators and Providers
Can I refer a participant?
Yes. Use the referral form. Please check the participant, or their nominee, agrees to the referral first. We'll let you know who's picking it up.
I'm a SIL provider. Can I join?
If you're registered with the NDIS Commission for SIL, or applied before 1 October 2026, and have vacancies or capacity, register your interest on the providers page and we'll be in touch.
